With non-Master-Elite contractors, the workmanship warranty disappears when the contractor disappears.

This continuous-review aspect is one reason Master Elite is the strongest signal of contractor quality — it's not a 'pay-once' certification.

What's the catch with the GAF Golden Pledge warranty?

It must be registered by the Master Elite contractor at the time of installation — homeowners can't register it themselves. It requires GAF-approved underlayment, GAF starter strip, GAF ridge cap, and GAF accessory products (the 'system' approach). Generic alternatives void the warranty. It also requires Title 24 documentation in California and certain ventilation specs. TMC files all paperwork as part of every install.

What if I want a non-GAF shingle — does this matter?

GAF Authorized is essentially open enrollment — any contractor who completes a basic product training and signs a code of conduct can apply. It's the bare minimum.
GAF Certified adds business-history requirements (3+ years operating), proof of insurance, license verification, and customer-satisfaction tracking. Most quality regional contractors are at least Certified.

If a contractor claims Master Elite but doesn't appear in the GAF locator at that tier, walk away.
